The Walking Paradox
wearable design + performance
The idea behind The Walking Paradox is intertwining Romani culture and Western culture. This work is supposed to tie the knot between where I come from and where I am now. The Romani, or Roma, are a traditionally itinerant ethnic group that originated from the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent. Western culture, as we all know it, is filled with capitalism and this need to fit in to a certain set of ideals. Both are extremely different in their world views. Conflicting ideologies fill a question of “who am I then?” in the heads of many who grew up in the western world. The Walking Paradox, in a nutshell, gives a sense that being a paradox is okay. People are not meant to fit into one square and that should be accepted and admired rather than shunned for their differences. As a society, understanding and appreciating our rich cultures will pave way to a more accepting and vibrant community.
